Thiruvananthapuram, July 26 (NationPress) Kerala's Education Minister V. Sivankutty announced on Saturday that the administration of a government-aided institution in Kollam district, where a 13-year-old boy tragically lost his life due to electrocution, has been terminated.
The eighth-grade student, Mithun, met his untimely demise while attempting to retrieve his shoes from atop a shed, coming into contact with a live electrical wire.
This unfortunate event occurred at Thevelakkara Boys School on July 17, just prior to the commencement of classes.
“Our initial step was to suspend the headmistress. After reviewing the circumstances, we have decided to dismiss the school management immediately. A senior educational officer from the district will now oversee the school's operations,” stated Sivankutty.
“Numerous improvements are required at the school. The financial responsibility lies with the management. We have lost one of our own, Mithun, and the management must bear accountability for this incident. This action serves as a warning to all educational institutions that they will face strict consequences if standards are not upheld,” he added.
The school manager, Tulasidharan Pillai, expressed acceptance of the state government's decision.
“Mithun's family has endured an irreparable loss. The loss of our positions is trivial in comparison. We accept the ruling,” Pillai remarked.
“However, he mentioned that the same power line has existed for a long time,” added Pillai.
“The previous headmaster of the institution was a prominent Congress leader. What actions were taken concerning this power line? The protests, along with Congress and UDF, seem aimed at politicizing the situation with upcoming local body and Assembly elections on the horizon,” he continued.
Mithun's father works as a mason, while his mother is employed as a domestic worker in Kuwait.
The state government has extended a cheque of Rs 5 lakh to Mithun's family.
