Is There a Controversy Over Bulk Messaging to Kerala's Government Employees in CM Vijayan's Name?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 21 (NationPress) As Kerala prepares for the forthcoming Assembly elections, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) is seeking an unprecedented third consecutive term under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. However, a controversy has arisen regarding an alleged bulk messaging initiative aimed at state government employees.
R.S. Sasikumar, the Chairman of the State United Confederation of Employees (SUCC), claims that a message purportedly from the Chief Minister was disseminated extensively to the personal WhatsApp accounts of government employees who receive salaries from the state.
The message allegedly emphasized the sanctioning of Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR)
Sasikumar characterized this situation as a significant violation of privacy. He accused that phone numbers submitted by employees to official government databases, including the Service and Payroll Administrative Repository for Kerala (SPARK), were used without permission for mass messaging and outreach.
“This prompts severe concerns regarding the safety and confidentiality of personal data maintained by the government,” he stated.
He further contended that no entity, including the government, is entitled to infringe on an individual's privacy without consent.
As per Sasikumar, the alleged inappropriate use of official data constitutes a breach of privacy protections mandated by existing data protection laws.
He called for legal action against officials within the Chief Minister’s Office if any unauthorized access or leakage of IT records has occurred, demanding the prompt filing of a police case and a time-sensitive investigation into the issue.
This controversy arises at a politically sensitive juncture, with the state gearing up for Assembly elections.
The Congress-led Opposition has been criticizing the government's outreach efforts, alleging that these initiatives are designed to sway public sentiment ahead of the elections.
This latest dispute is anticipated to further escalate political discourse in the state as preparations for the elections intensify.
