Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 20 (NationPress) The President of Congress in Kerala, Sunny Joseph, has called for the resignation of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing him of abusing his position to shield senior officials implicated in a vigilance investigation.
Joseph referenced remarks from a vigilance court regarding the illegal assets case involving ADGP M.R. Ajith Kumar, noting that the ruling explicitly indicated that the accused were granted a “clean chit” with the Chief Minister’s endorsement.
Furthermore, he asserted that the Chief Minister's Political Secretary, P. Sasi, was also implicated in the case, yet the government opted to protect them rather than uphold the rule of law.
“This constitutes a clear breach of the oath of office. The court has pointed out that the Chief Minister's interference to safeguard the accused was both unlawful and unconstitutional. No other Chief Minister in the history of Kerala has been subject to such harsh judicial criticism. Predecessors in similar circumstances have resigned, and it is imperative that Pinarayi Vijayan follows suit,” Joseph insisted.
He also suggested that Ajith Kumar served as a “bridge” between the Chief Minister and the RSS, which he believes explains the unwarranted protection afforded to him.
Joseph further accused the leadership of the ruling CPI-M of remaining silent amid allegations that party officials diverted funds from government projects, asserting that this situation necessitates a comprehensive investigation.
He condemned the recent violent assaults on Congress members throughout the state, claiming that CPI-M's criminal elements were operating with police backing.
Specific incidents in Kayamkulam, Kadakkal, Kannur, and Ezhuconn Polytechnic College were cited, where Congress and KSU activists reportedly faced targeting during peaceful demonstrations.
“The police are failing to act impartially. The Chief Minister himself holds the Home portfolio and is providing political cover for these assaults,” he stated.
Joseph emphasized the need for accountability, urging the government and police to ensure the safety of citizens and uphold the rule of law.
In the interim, Joseph announced that to prepare for the forthcoming local body elections, ward-level Congress committees would undertake a statewide house visit and fundraising initiative from August 29 to September 2.
This program aims to inform the public about the “anti-people” policies of both the state and central governments and to highlight party leader Rahul Gandhi’s commitment to preserving democratic values.
