Kolkata, Nov 13 (NationPress) Following the recent car bomb explosion in Delhi, Kolkata Police has initiated enhanced surveillance measures throughout the city. The objective is to locate individuals from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who have not returned to their native countries despite their visas having expired.
On Thursday, police sources revealed that officials are actively investigating whether individuals from these three nations are concealing themselves in Kolkata or its more remote districts.
Simultaneously, the Kolkata Police's investigative teams have begun probing into the potential resurgence of dormant sleeper cells linked to various militant groups. Following the devastating Delhi bomb explosion that resulted in 12 fatalities, the city police headquarters has issued an alert to officers.
According to sources, every police precinct has been instructed to monitor residents from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Pakistan who entered the state with legitimate passports but failed to depart after their visas lapsed. The immigration department has also commenced inquiries based on this information.
Police investigators noted numerous instances where the visas of individuals entering India on Bangladeshi and Afghan passports have expired. However, these individuals often evade authorities by hiding within the state's interior regions.
Reports indicate that many have procured fraudulent Indian identity cards through intermediaries, falsely presenting themselves as Indian citizens to employers for continued residence in the country. Intelligence officials express serious concerns regarding foreigners masquerading as Indian nationals.
"Numerous Bangladeshis utilizing such tactics have already been apprehended by Kolkata and state police. Recently, three Afghans were arrested in south Kolkata for residing in the country with counterfeit identity cards. Detectives have not dismissed the possibility of Pakistani nationals also hiding in Kolkata or surrounding districts," a police source stated.
The police suspect that some of these foreign nationals may have affiliates within militant organizations.
Sources indicate that after compiling a list of these foreign nationals, police are working to ascertain their potential hideouts. In recent years, several militants have been captured by intelligence officials in and around Kolkata.
Efforts are underway to determine if the dormant sleeper cells of various militant groups have reactivated. Additionally, police are closely monitoring the activities of militants who have been released on bail or served sentences.
