Hyderabad, May 16 (NationPress) A statement from Konda Surekha, the Minister for Forest, Environment and Endowments in Telangana, regarding the acceptance of money by ministers to expedite file approvals has sparked considerable controversy.
The remarks were made during the foundation-laying ceremony for a government girls' junior college in Warangal on Thursday.
“As the Forest Minister, I often receive requests for file clearances from various companies. It is a common practice for ministers to accept payments for such clearances. However, I make it clear that they should not offer any money, but rather engage in social service initiatives like building a school,” she stated.
She further mentioned that when a company sought her approval for a file, she recommended that they construct the college building instead.
Surekha expressed her happiness that the company agreed to undertake the construction at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore.
This statement has led to backlash from critics of the Congress government, who view it as an implicit confession of corruption.
In response, Surekha defended herself by stating that her comments were misrepresented. On 'X', she clarified, “I was referring to the ministers of the previous BRS government who would accept money for their services. My remarks were directed at their performance.”
“It is inappropriate to misinterpret my words,” she continued, indicating that she would provide further clarification through a video later that day.
Konda Surekha is no stranger to controversy; last year, her remarks linking K. T. Rama Rao of the BRS to the breakup of actors Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu caused a significant uproar.
Both Nagarjuna Akkineni, Naga's father and renowned actor, and Rama Rao have initiated separate defamation lawsuits against her.
