Mysuru (Karnataka), Dec 22 (NationPress) In response to the ongoing debate regarding the Hate Speech Regulation Bill, Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that only individuals who engage in provocative speeches are opposing the legislation. He emphasized that those who avoid making inflammatory remarks will not face any legal repercussions.
During a media briefing in Mysuru on Monday, the Chief Minister questioned the defensive reactions from BJP leaders. “If someone accuses you of being a pumpkin thief, why respond defensively?” he remarked, referencing a popular Kannada proverb.
Addressing the BJP's claims that the Hate Speech Prevention Bill targets specific individuals, Siddaramaiah clarified that the law is applicable to leaders across all political parties. “Why is it only the BJP that opposes it? Does hate speech contribute to societal peace?” he queried.
He further stated that the Bill aims to safeguard peace and harmony. “Instances of hate speech have surged recently, and this legislation has been crafted to address that. The BJP's strong opposition stems from their own engagement in hate speech,” he alleged.
It is worth noting that Shobha Karandlaje, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, accused the Congress-led government of attempting to impose an undeclared Emergency in Karnataka.
The Union Minister asserted that the regulation of hate speech will not be enforced under any circumstances, arguing that the Congress expects its past actions to be accepted without dissent.
She criticized the Belagavi Legislature session for focusing on introducing the Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill instead of discussing pressing issues facing North Karnataka.
In response to allegations from the BJP regarding the misappropriation of Gruha Laxmi scheme funds, Siddaramaiah stated that there is no possibility of misappropriation when funds are directly deposited into beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
He assured that the Gruha Lakshmi funds for February and March are yet to be released and will be verified before disbursement. “If there were no funds, could we have sustained payments for 23 months?” he asked.
