Assam CM Announces Historic Peace Accord with Kuki-Hmar Groups
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 15 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Sunday that the state has successfully formalized a peace agreement with the Kuki-Hmar factions just before the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was set to be implemented. This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to fostering enduring solutions instead of temporary electoral gains.
In a message shared on the social media platform X, Sarma noted that while some political groups offer incentives right before the MCC comes into effect, the ruling BJP prioritizes addressing fundamental issues through sustainable solutions.
“While certain parties distribute incentives mere moments before the MCC is announced, the BJP is committed to delivering concrete solutions to persistent challenges. Therefore, prior to the election announcement, we have established a peace agreement with the Kuki-Hmar factions, guaranteeing the ongoing journey towards peace in Assam,” Sarma conveyed.
The Chief Minister referred to this agreement as a significant achievement in the peace process of the state, dubbing it “Assam’s Dawn of Peace.”
Sarma elaborated that the pact encompasses the establishment of the Kuki Welfare and Development Council (KWDC) and the Hmar Welfare and Development Council (HWDC), which will serve as institutional frameworks in Guwahati to enhance the socio-economic advancement of these communities.
Additionally, targeted initiatives are in the pipeline to improve educational opportunities, economic prospects, and the preservation of cultural heritage among the Kuki and Hmar populations.
Addressing the overall security landscape, Sarma emphasized the notable progress Assam has made in curbing insurgency over recent years, with over 9,000 militants reintegrated into society as a result of government-led peace initiatives.
The Assam administration has entered into various peace accords with insurgent groups in recent years, aiming to secure long-term stability and growth throughout the state.
Furthermore, the Election Commission of India has unveiled the schedule for the Assam Assembly elections, indicating that polling will occur in a single phase statewide.
The commission also stated that vote counting will coincide with other states conducting Assembly elections.
The election for Assam's 126-member assembly is scheduled for April 9, with the counting of votes occurring on May 4.
