Our goal is to guarantee that innovation transitions from the lab to practical applications, turning ideas into tangible results,” the minister remarked.
He further explained that fostering startups and promoting indigenous technologies will be crucial for developing a modern, self-sufficient, and globally competitive steel sector.
Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik, addressing the audience, underscored India's distinctive position in the global steel market.
He observed that while numerous economies are experiencing a downturn, India is witnessing significant demand growth, presenting both an opportunity and a duty to lead through innovation.
“By making bold investments in R&D today, we are securing the future of the Indian steel industry as a resilient, world-class powerhouse for the coming generations,” he stated.
SRTMI President and SAIL Director (Mines) M.R. Gupta highlighted the importance of a mission-oriented approach to research and development.
He indicated that the focus would be on accelerating technology development, validating pilot projects, and speeding up commercialisation to boost productivity, lower costs, and enhance sustainability.
The workshop included a startup pitch session that showcased innovations in process efficiency, digitalisation, waste utilization, and advanced materials.
Prominent steel companies also presented industry-focused problem statements that align with critical priorities such as resource efficiency, green steel production, and decarbonisation technologies.
Esteemed academics from leading institutions shared technical presentations on operational excellence, circular economy frameworks, and sustainability, while a poster presentation session facilitated knowledge exchange among students, researchers, startups, and industry professionals.
