New Delhi, March 28 (NationPress) Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who is currently entangled in several criminal cases over his "traitor" remark directed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, submitted a petition to the Madras High Court on Friday, requesting transit anticipatory bail.
The plea was brought forth for an urgent hearing before Justice Sunder Mohan, who assured that he would review the case later in the day.
On Monday, a Zero FIR was lodged against Kamra at the MIDC police station in Mumbai for allegedly making an inappropriate joke during a stand-up comedy performance.
The Khar Police have filed charges against Yuva Sena general secretary Rahool Kanal under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Police Act.
Additionally, 20 activists from the Sena were detained. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 9, Dixit Gedam, confirmed that two cases have been filed at the Khar police station.
One case pertains to Kamra's derogatory comments, while the other involves individuals who damaged the Unicontinental hotel, the venue for Kamra's comedy show.
An investigation is currently ongoing. The Shiv Sena has denounced Kamra's "distasteful and defamatory" remarks made during his recent performance at the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai, where he performed a parody targeting Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Authorities have already charged Kamra under section 356(2) (defamation) of the BNS.
The Mumbai Police had issued two summons to Kamra, who has yet to appear for questioning.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Maharashtra Legislative Council accepted a notice of privilege against Kamra and has forwarded it to the Privileges Committee.
Upper House Chairman Ram Shinde stated, "I have acknowledged the notice of breach of privilege against Kunal Kamra and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare, and it has been sent to Privilege Committee chairman Prasad Lad. The committee will determine the next steps regarding the motion."
