Mumbai, March 31 (NationPress) A significant uncertainty surrounds whether the controversial comedian Kunal Kamra will show up at Mumbai's Khar Police station on Monday to provide his statement, as there has been no correspondence from him to the authorities, according to an official.

The Mumbai Police have so far issued two summons to Kamra. The latest, issued on March 24, requested him to report to the Khar Police Station on Monday (March 31) regarding his recent “traitor” remark aimed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

A police spokesperson confirmed that there was no official update on whether Kamra would present himself at the Khar police station today.

While the likelihood of Kamra participating in the investigation today appears minimal, his attorney, V. Suresh, has expressed concerns regarding the comedian's safety if he travels to Mumbai.

On Monday, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut also voiced security worries for Kamra, claiming that the comedian had received threats from certain Cabinet ministers.

On March 24, the Khar Police issued summons directed to Kamra but delivered them to his parents' home in Mumbai, instructing him to appear for questioning on Monday, his lawyer stated.

In response, Kamra sent a letter indicating he was out of Mumbai due to prior commitments and proposed to appear on April 2. The Madras High Court has granted Kamra protection against arrest until April 7.

Kamra found himself in hot water after he humorously referenced a popular Hindi song, indirectly labeling Shinde a “traitor,” in relation to the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis, which ultimately led to the downfall of the Uddhav Thackeray-led government.

In February, he recorded a video for a program titled “Naya Bharat”, which was uploaded on social media on March 23. The comic act sparked fierce backlash from the ruling party in Maharashtra shortly after its release.

The situation escalated following the video’s release, leading to an incident where furious Shiv Sainiks vandalized the Unicontinental hotel in Khar, the site of his filming. This incident led to the arrest and later bail of 12 Shinde supporters.

Previously, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 9 (Mumbai), Dixit Gedam, confirmed that two offenses have been registered at the Khar police station concerning the issue.

One offense is directed against Kamra for his derogatory remarks, while the other targets those who vandalized the hotel.

As the Khar Police continue to investigate the primary case linked to these events, three additional FIRs against Kamra in various cities across Maharashtra have been consolidated with the Mumbai FIR.
