Bengaluru, Oct 7 (NationPress) In light of the ongoing discussion regarding the inclusion of the Kuruba community in the Schedule Tribe (ST) category, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized that it is essential to increase the reservation for this community. He asserted that no one should infringe upon another's rights or opportunities.
"If Kurubas are classified under the ST category, it is imperative that the overall ST reservation quota is augmented. I stand firmly behind this statement. It is crucial that no one's rights are compromised or opportunities diminished — this is my unwavering commitment," he expressed.
As a member of the Kuruba community himself, Siddaramaiah noted that the Nayaka community has been vocally opposing this proposal.
This assertion from the Chief Minister is poised to ignite a significant discussion within the state.
His remarks were delivered during the Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti event at the Banquet Hall of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, where he also honored the recipients of the Valmiki awards.
He further clarified that the current push for the Kurubas' inclusion in the ST category is being spearheaded by former Deputy Chief Minister K.S. Eshwarappa.
When Basavaraj Bommai held the position of Chief Minister, he had forwarded Eshwarappa's proposal to the Central government for consideration.
According to CM Siddaramaiah, the Centre has requested additional clarifications regarding this proposal, which is currently under the knowledge of the state government.
He encouraged the Valmiki community to remain united in support of those who have championed their welfare during their time in power.
He highlighted that under his leadership, the Congress-led government enacted laws to allocate funds in the development budget proportionate to the population of SC/ST communities.
Furthermore, it was during Siddaramaiah's tenure that Residential and Morarji schools were established for the SC/ST communities.
He urged the Valmiki community to remember and honor those who contributed to their upliftment while in power.
Siddaramaiah recalled that he and former Minister Ugrappa had previously appealed to the late Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde to include the Valmiki and Kuruba communities in the ST category.
Although Hegde had sent the request to the Centre, it was not acted upon.
Nevertheless, Ugrappa persisted in his efforts, collaborating with former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and later during Prime Minister Chandrashekhar's administration, the Valmiki community was successfully included in the ST category, aided by Deve Gowda.
He reminded the audience of Ugrappa's pivotal role in securing reservations for the Valmiki, Beda, and Nayak communities.
Furthermore, he pointed out that during the tenure of late J.H. Patel as Chief Minister, several communities were recommended for inclusion in the ST category, yet this has not been implemented to date.
