Beirut, Jan 14 (NationPress) The newly-elected President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, on Tuesday emphasized the importance of a seamless transition in forming a new government to convey positive signals to the global community.
"It is essential that no barriers hinder the formation of the government for one simple reason: We are presented with significant opportunities today that need to be seized. Moreover, we must communicate to the international community that Lebanon is capable of self-governance, transparently executing reconstruction efforts, and establishing the state we all yearn for," stated the President.
Aoun expressed these thoughts during a meeting with representatives from the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council, as reported by the Lebanese presidency.
He underscored that reconstruction is the top priority of his administration, announcing plans to visit various countries to seek aid in rebuilding the nation, which has recently emerged from nearly 14 months of severe conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
The President also advocated for unity among all sects, asserting, "No group in this country should have an advantage over another. Lebanon belongs to everyone. If one component is fractured, all of Lebanon will suffer," as reported by Xinhua news agency.
The former army chief, Aoun, was elected as president on January 9, marking the conclusion of over two years of presidential vacancy in the nation.
On Monday, Aoun appointed Nawaf Salam as Lebanon's Prime Minister and charged him with the task of forming a new government.
Salam pledged on Tuesday to commence a new chapter in the country, as reported by local TV channel Al Jadeed.
"The moment has arrived to initiate a new chapter rooted in justice, security, progress, and opportunities, so Lebanon can thrive as a nation of freedom and equal citizenship," Salam remarked in his first comments as Prime Minister at Baabda Palace in Beirut.
The Prime Minister-designate emphasized the urgent need for reconstruction following the nearly 14-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which left many civilian homes and infrastructure in ruins.
"A significant portion of our population still has their homes and institutions devastated, and we must reconstruct the villages in the Bekaa region, the south, and the capital Beirut. Reconstruction is a commitment," he stated.
Salam also vowed to adhere to UN Resolution 1701. "We must diligently work towards the full implementation of Resolution 1701 and ensure the complete withdrawal of the enemy from the last inch of our lands," he asserted.
