Seoul, Sep 29 (NationPress) On Monday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung officially welcomed seven new ambassadors to South Korea, including the representative from the European Union (EU), as announced by the presidential office.
The new ambassadors are Ugo Astuto from the EU, Nadine Olivieri Lozano from Switzerland, Bartosz Wisniewski from Poland, Tanel Sepp from Estonia, Philippe Lafortune from Canada, Mikael Hemniti Winther from Denmark, and Wong Kai Jiun from Singapore.
Traditionally, new ambassadors present copies of their credentials to the head of state to formally begin their duties.
During the ceremony, President Lee urged the ambassadors to act as a “bridge” in fostering bilateral relations that yield “practical” benefits for citizens in their respective nations, as communicated by presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung in a written briefing.
He emphasized the significance of collaboration in artificial intelligence, advanced technologies, and the defense industry, where South Korea is recognized for its competitive advantage, underscoring the need for enhanced cooperation as the nation aims for a more prominent position on the global stage, reported Yonhap news agency.
The ambassadors conveyed their dedication to fortifying bilateral relations and expressed support for the South Korean government's initiatives to alleviate tensions and foster peace on the Korean Peninsula, according to Kang. They also extended invitations for President Lee to visit their countries at a mutually convenient time to further enrich relations.
Previously, on September 26, South Korea's former chief envoy to Vietnam, Lee Hyuk, was appointed as the inaugural ambassador to Japan under the Lee Jae Myung administration, as stated by the foreign ministry.
This appointment was announced as South Korea and Japan finalize arrangements for a visit by outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to Busan next week for discussions with President Lee.
Lee Hyuk has been part of the foreign service since 1979, having served as the director general of the ministry's Asian and Pacific Affairs Bureau and as a minister at the South Korean Embassy in Japan. He also held the position of South Korea's chief envoy to the Philippines and subsequently to Vietnam.
