Key Takeaways
Seoul, Nov 2 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong reached an agreement on Sunday aimed at creating a strategic partnership between their nations, enhancing collaboration across a range of sectors including defense and trade.
The leaders made this announcement during a joint press conference at the presidential office, following their summit discussions that occurred during Wong's official visit to South Korea.
Lee remarked, “Our two countries share numerous similarities, having both achieved extraordinary growth driven by human capital and a commitment to an open free trade order, despite facing limitations in land, scarce resources, and a challenging geopolitical landscape.”
Among the initial agreements, both nations reached a consensus on the export of beef and pork from Jeju Island to Singapore. They also committed to enhancing collaboration in areas such as security, defense, artificial intelligence, advanced technology, and addressing transnational crimes, including online scams, according to the Yonhap news agency.
As part of this strategic partnership, South Korea and Singapore will intensify their cooperation to effectively confront global challenges like climate change and transnational crimes, especially in the context of an international order that has long supported global growth and prosperity, as stated by the presidential office.
Wong pointed to the significant potential for collaboration in sectors such as the green industry, digital industry, security, and defense, while fully supporting South Korea's efforts to foster peace on the Korean Peninsula.
During their meeting, the two nations also signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) regarding digital cooperation, logistics and shipping, as well as culture and sports.
Wong is currently in Seoul after participating in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit and related events held in the southeastern city of Gyeongju last week.
