Bhubaneswar, March 3 (NationPress) A tattoo depicting Lord Jagannath on the thigh of a foreign woman has ignited considerable outrage in Odisha.
Social activist Subrat Kumar Mohani from Bhubaneswar has filed a complaint against the owner of the tattoo studio, Rocky Tattooz, situated in the Saheed Nagar area of the city, where this controversial tattoo was created.
In response to the complaint, the Saheed Nagar police have registered a case (85/25) under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the shop owner.
“We noticed a photo of a foreign woman on the social media account of Rocky Tattooz, showcasing Lord Jagannath’s tattoo on her thigh, which we find objectionable. The tattoo has offended our religious sentiments, and we demand a public apology at Puri,” stated the complainant.
Amid the backlash, the owner of Rocky Tattooz, Rockey Ranjan Bisoi, and the foreign woman have both issued apologies through individual video messages shared on social media.
“I truly apologize as the tattoo was done in our studio. I also seek forgiveness on behalf of the artist who designed it. The woman, an Italian national, visited our shop on Saturday, expressing her profound devotion to Lord Jagannath and requesting the tattoo. She specifically asked for it to be placed on her thigh due to her work at an NGO where visible tattoos are not allowed,” explained Bisoi.
Bisoi mentioned that he advised the woman to either remove the tattoo or cover it up with another one. However, she can only return after 25 days, as immediate removal could lead to infection.
Meanwhile, the foreign woman has also conveyed her regret in a video statement. “I never meant to be disrespectful. I am not only a devotee of Lord Jagannath but also visit the temple daily. I made a mistake, and I am genuinely sorry,” she expressed.
The Saheed Nagar police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
