LPG Bookings Drop as Consumer Anxiety Subsides Amid Raids on Hoarding
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) The number of LPG bookings has seen a decrease as consumer anxiety regarding the availability of domestic gas has subsided. Raids are being conducted in various states to curb hoarding and black marketing, as reported in an official statement released on Monday.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) of India shared on X that LPG bookings have fallen, stating, "Approximately 77 lakh bookings were recorded on 14th March 2026, compared to 88.8 lakh on 13th March 2026."
Moreover, the report highlighted that online bookings for LPG cylinders rose from 84 percent to nearly 87 percent, with no incidents of dry-outs reported at LPG distributorships.
The statement further noted that operations are underway across multiple states to investigate hoarding and black marketing, with 22 states and Union Territories (UTs) setting up control rooms to adequately monitor the situation.
Consumers are encouraged to refrain from panic bookings, utilize digital booking platforms, and limit unnecessary visits to LPG distributors, as suggested by the statement.
In a related update, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas affirmed its commitment to safeguarding the interests of domestic consumers and ensuring a steady supply of LPG, especially for households and critical areas such as hospitals and educational institutions.
Oil marketing companies (OMCs) — including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum — have reported no dry-out incidents at retail outlets, maintaining regular supplies of petrol and diesel, as per the ministry's statement.
The public is urged to remain calm as the government is dedicated to ensuring the adequate availability of LPG for households and essential sectors. LPG cylinders can be booked through various digital methods, including IVRS calls, SMS, WhatsApp, and mobile applications offered by OMCs.
The OMCs are actively promoting online bookings, discouraging panic purchasing, and keeping LPG distribution centers operational on Sundays to ensure efficient supply.
LPG supply remains under surveillance given the current geopolitical circumstances.
