Mumbai, May 2 (NationPress) Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan emphasized that although Maharashtra and Gujarat emerged from linguistic divisions, both states share a common spirit.
He highlighted that Maharashtra and Gujarat have played a significant role in the nation's freedom struggle, fostering a deep sense of patriotism among its citizens.
As part of the Central government's 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' initiative, the statehood anniversaries of Maharashtra and Gujarat were commemorated on Thursday at Raj Bhavan, attended by the Governor and Chancellor of State Universities, Radhakrishnan.
“Maharashtra and Gujarat have produced numerous national icons whose impact transcends state boundaries. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from Maharashtra serves as a beacon of inspiration for the entire nation, while the principles of non-violence espoused by Mahatma Gandhi of Gujarat resonate globally,” declared the Governor.
He noted that both states are currently making significant contributions to the nation's economy.
Referencing historical ties between Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, the Governor mentioned that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj conquered the forts of Jinji and Vellore in Tamil Nadu and established the Shiva temple in Tiruvannamalai to protect religious practices. Additionally, the Bhosale Raja of Thanjavur played a crucial role in preserving Tamil literature in his 'Saraswati Mahal' library.
He expressed that India's status as a great nation today is a result of this cultural unity and asserted that maintaining this unity will lead to India becoming the foremost nation in the world.
“Many global leaders wonder how India remains a cohesive nation despite its diverse religions, languages, and cultures. Yet, despite these differences, the nation stands firm on its foundations of religion and culture,” the Governor stated.
The Governor believes that by safeguarding this unity, India is destined to evolve into a developed nation.
On this occasion, he commended Savitribai Phule Pune University students for their remarkable performance showcasing the folk dances and songs of Maharashtra and Gujarat.
During the cultural event, students showcased traditional folk dances like Koli, Waghya Murli, Dindi, and Tippani.
They also performed the state song 'Jai Jai Garvi Gujarat'. Documentaries illustrating the history, heritage, folk art, and culture of Maharashtra and Gujarat were screened during the State Foundation Day celebration, as noted in the release from Raj Bhavan.
