Maharashtra Legislative Council Sparks Debate on Illegal Immigration
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 28 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Legislative Council experienced a contentious debate on Saturday, as members from both the treasury and Opposition engaged in a heated discussion concerning the presence of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants in Mumbai and surrounding regions of the state.
The tension escalated when Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Anil Parab asserted that he could “spot 2,000 infiltrators within two days,” which prompted a strong response from Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam.
Parab criticized the government's approach, referencing a recent incident involving fraudulent birth certificates highlighted by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde. He emphasized, “This is not merely a political dilemma; it concerns our national security. Illegal immigrants are residing in virtually every slum in Mumbai and even operating small factories. Can the police and municipal authorities genuinely be unaware of this situation?”
Taking a jab at BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, Parab remarked, “Kirit Somaiya is currently without responsibilities; send him with me, and I will locate 2,000 infiltrators in just two days.”
He argued that simply verifying documents is inadequate and urged the establishment of a Special Task Force for thorough operations throughout various localities.
In response, Minister Kadam stated that if Parab has specific details, he should provide them to the authorities for appropriate action.
Highlighting statistics, Kadam noted that in 2021, during the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, 109 Bangladeshi nationals were deported. “By 2025, we deported 2,376 infiltrators. The data clearly illustrates the difference,” he stated.
Kadam highlighted that special units, consisting of one officer and five personnel, have been formed at each police station to tackle illegal immigration. He informed the House that search operations are being conducted with the support of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).
Regarding the call for a Special Task Force, Kadam indicated that the government would contemplate its creation if deemed necessary.
