Tensions Rise in Maharashtra Assembly Over Satara ZP Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 23 (NationPress) Shiv Sena-UBT member Anil Parab criticized the BJP-led Mahayuti administration on Monday regarding the alleged assault of a minister during the recent election for the president and vice president of the Satara Zilla Parishad.
“If ministers and party workers are facing violence in this state, how can the government ensure safety for ordinary citizens?” he questioned.
Parab directed his comments towards the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), stating: “Currently, the Bharatiya Janata Party is overpowering you, and you exhibit fear even in mentioning their name. Why did you initiate a rebellion? You asserted that your dignity was being violated by the NCP and labeled yourselves as ‘cubs of the tiger.’ What has happened to that dignity? Where is your spirit of defiance now?”
“The police are beating you, yet you remain silent. You consider yourselves tigers — where are those tigers now? You sit meekly. Why do you display aggression only towards the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena while showing submission to the BJP? I have never witnessed such a sight in this House. If you resign and relinquish power today, we will regard you as we do Bhagat Singh. Do you possess the courage to relinquish power?” he added.
The remark about “tails between your legs” elicited sharp responses from Shiv Sena Ministers Uday Samant and Shambhuraj Desai.
Minister Samant retorted, “Anil Parab accused us of ‘tucking our tails’. When we revolted and arrived in Mumbai, threats were made that we would be harmed, yet we stood our ground. They claimed we couldn’t enter through Worli. They should not lecture us about bravery or ‘tucking tails’.”
Minister Desai remarked: “Recall the threats made during our revolt — that our ‘bodies would return lifeless’ or that our ‘guts would be taken out’. Even so, we arrived openly. We did not shy away; we took a bus and proceeded straight to the Vidhan Bhavan. Do not provoke us regarding our courage.”
Minister Samant added: “We have sought justice, and our ministers have appealed to you — that is political decorum. Those devoid of such values are the ones who speak in this manner.”
Earlier, Satara Guardian Minister Shambhuraj Desai recounted his distressing experience, stating that despite his 40 years in politics, he had never encountered such treatment. He claimed that while guiding 33 members to the polling booth — following an alliance between the Shiv Sena and the NCP — they were obstructed by over 100 police officers in plain clothes just 10 meters from the voting area. The police allegedly acted on a “false complaint” regarding member abduction.
“I am a state minister, yet I was physically assaulted by the police. I suffered serious injuries to my hand. If a minister is unsafe, what does that say about the law and order situation in the state?” he inquired.
In addition, Parab addressed the matter of a fraudulent ‘Baba’ (godman) supposedly deceiving citizens in Maharashtra. He indicated how politicians have become intertwined with such individuals involved in sexual assault and land grabbing from the underprivileged.
While recognizing that photographs exist of various political leaders with this individual, Parab firmly opposed any financial connections, vested interests, or involvement in criminal actions, including exerting political pressure through phone calls.
