Sanjay Raut Acquitted by Mumbai Sessions Court in Defamation Case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 26 (NationPress) A Sessions Court in Mumbai has acquitted Sanjay Raut, a prominent leader of Shiv Sena (UBT) and a Rajya Sabha MP, in a criminal defamation case brought forth by Medha Somaiya, the spouse of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. The ruling was made after the court reserved its decision on Raut's appeal, which contested a previous conviction from a Magistrate's Court.
Following this ruling, Raut is now officially acquitted in the matter.
The case erupted from allegations Raut made in the media, accusing Medha Somaiya of being involved in a purported Rs 100 crore scam concerning the construction of public toilets under the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation. Medha Somaiya vehemently denied these claims, labeling them as false and defamatory.
Last September, a Mazagaon Metropolitan Magistrate Court had ruled against Raut, sentencing him to 15 days of simple imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs 25,000. However, this sentence was put on hold pending Raut's appeal to the Sessions Court.
Medha Somaiya, who teaches Organic Chemistry at Ruia College in Mumbai, alleged that Raut's public remarks tarnished both her and her husband's reputation. Before pursuing legal action, the Somaiyas lodged a complaint at the Mulund Police Station, asserting that no scam was committed and requesting accountability for what they deemed baseless allegations.
Raut, for his part, asserted that his allegations were grounded on official documents and simply highlighted potential irregularities in the toilet construction project, a topic he mentioned in the Maharashtra Assembly.
The Sessions Court's decision to overturn the earlier conviction marks a notable legal triumph for Raut amid a contentious political landscape involving rival factions in Maharashtra.
