Mumbai, February 17 (NationPress) – A court in Mumbai has postponed the session concerning Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut’s appeal against his conviction in a defamation case initiated by Medha K. Somaiya, the spouse of former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya.

The Sessions Court decided to defer the hearing due to the absence of a representative for Medha Somaiya.

Raut’s attorney, Manoj Pingle, stated, "Today was meant to be the concluding session, but the respondent did not show up. We presented our remaining arguments today, including case laws citing Supreme Court rulings, and we will accept the decision from the honourable judge."

In September 2024, a Mazgaon Metropolitan Magistrate Court found Raut guilty in the defamation suit lodged by Medha Somaiya in 2022, imposing a 15-day jail sentence along with a fine of ₹25,000.

Following his conviction, Raut filed an application for suspension of his sentence, allowing him to appeal and securing bail.

Details regarding the conviction were shared by Medha Somaiya’s counsel, Vivekanand Gupta, who noted, "Raut has been sentenced to 15 days in jail under IPC Section 500 for defamation, along with a fine of ₹25,000 as compensation."

The ruling stemmed from a two-year-old libel lawsuit initiated by Medha Somaiya against Raut, who had accused her of being part of a ₹100-crore toilet construction scam in Mira Road (Thane), linked to an NGO managed by the Somaiyas.

Medha Somaiya, an Organic Chemistry professor at Ruia College in Mumbai, took legal action against Raut for his "defamatory statements" regarding her and her husband.

Raut has consistently claimed he was merely questioning based on specific official documents that raised doubts about the toilet project, a position supported by members of the ruling Mahayuti alliance and discussed in the Assembly.

"Where have I defamed anyone? This is just a tactic to imprison me," Raut remarked after being found guilty.

Post-conviction, Supriya Sule, the Nationalist Congress Party (SP) Working President, alongside Sushma Andhare, Deputy Leader of SS (UBT), criticized the case as politically motivated. Raut had previously implicated Medha Somaiya in the alleged scam, leading to her defamation suit.

Medha Somaiya and her husband expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating their trust in the judicial system had been reaffirmed.

"I’m just a regular housewife focused on social service and education, but I will confront anyone endangering my family. I am happy with the court’s decision. This will deter others from making such baseless claims," she told reporters after Raut's conviction.

In 2022, Raut had accused Medha Somaiya and her family of involvement in the alleged scam, claiming to possess supporting documentation but failed to present it in court.

The Somaiyas initially filed a complaint at the Mulund Police Station before pursuing a defamation case in the Mazgaon Metropolitan Magistrate Court to contest Raut’s accusations, firmly asserting that "not a single rupee scam was committed."
