Mumbai, Jan 29 (NationPress) In light of the three-day state mourning period declared due to the unexpected passing of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, the timeline for the upcoming phases of the general elections for 12 Zilla Parishads and 125 Panchayat Samitis has been adjusted.
The voting, which was initially set for February 5, is now rescheduled for February 7. As a result, the vote counting has been postponed from February 7 to February 9, as announced by the State Election Commission (SEC) in an official statement.
The SEC had first issued the election schedule for these local governance bodies on January 13. The 12 zilla parishads, which remain compliant with the 50 percent quota limit, encompass Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Kolhapur, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Parbhani, Dharashiv, and Latur. The 125 panchayat samitis slated for elections are affiliated with these 12 zilla parishads.
The preliminary phases, including the nomination filings, withdrawal of candidates, allocation of symbols, and the final candidate list publication, have already been completed. The upcoming stages include voting, counting, and the formal announcement of the elected representatives in the Government Gazette.
Following the Supreme Court's provision for a two-week extension beyond January 31, 2026, for conducting these elections, the state government declared a mourning period from January 28 to January 30, 2026, after the tragic demise of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on January 28.
“In light of this mourning period, the following adjustments have been made. According to the official notification, relevant District Collectors will publish the updated election notice on January 31, 2026. Voting is scheduled for February 7 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., public campaigning must conclude by 10:00 p.m. on February 5, and the counting of votes will commence at 10:00 a.m. on February 9,” the SEC statement noted.
The Model Code of Conduct will cease immediately after the results are announced. The names of the elected officials will be published in the Government Gazette by February 11.
