New Delhi, Oct 15 (NationPress) Maithili Thakur, a well-known folk and devotional artist acclaimed for her significant role in promoting Maithili culture, has been nominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as their candidate for the Alinagar Assembly seat in the Darbhanga district during the forthcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
The 25-year-old, who hails from Benipatti in Madhubani district, officially joined the BJP in a ceremony led by state party president Dilip Jaiswal. She takes over from the sitting BJP MLA Mishrilal Yadav, whose candidacy was withdrawn due to reported dissatisfaction with the party's internal affairs.
Thakur’s nomination is a calculated strategy by the BJP to capitalize on her popularity among the youth and cultural advocates, aiming to enhance their appeal in the Mithilanchal region, where Alinagar has become a crucial battleground.
“I hold great admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. My goal is to serve the community and aid in the development of Bihar,” Thakur stated after her induction, showcasing her commitment to advancing Maithili traditions through public service.
Reports suggest that Thakur’s political journey was preceded by discussions with BJP election coordinator Vinod Tawde and Nityanand Rai, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, last week, which ignited speculation regarding her political ambitions.
The BJP’s recent candidate list of 71 individuals consists of a mix of seasoned politicians and newcomers, in line with the NDA’s seat-sharing agreement, where both the BJP and JD(U) will contest 101 seats each.
Voting for the 243-member Bihar Assembly is scheduled for two phases on November 6 and 11, with results set to be announced on November 14.
The NDA, which includes the BJP, JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), and smaller allies, faces significant opposition from the Mahagathbandhan, led by the RJD and Congress, as well as Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party.
