What Did Amritsar Police Uncover in the Narco-Terror Bust?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, Jan 29 (NationPress) The Amritsar Rural Police have successfully dismantled a significant cross-border narcotics-terrorism operation, aided by the Village Defence Committee (VDC). They seized 42.9 kg of heroin, four hand grenades, and a Star-mark pistol alongside 46 cartridges, according to Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.
This operation stems from reliable and actionable intelligence gathered through the VDCs, a key initiative by the state government designed to enhance community engagement in internal security and anti-drug measures.
DGP Yadav indicated that initial investigations suggest the narcotics, weapons, and explosives were transported via drones from across the international border, pointing to the involvement of a well-organized cross-border narcotics-terror network.
Following the investigation, two suspects, residents of Amritsar, have been detained. Ongoing inquiries aim to track down the fleeing suspects, confirm the chain of possession, and expose the broader conspiracy.
Deputy Inspector General of Police (Border Range) Sandeep Goel elaborated that responding quickly to inputs from the VDC network, police teams intercepted a motorcycle in Oothian village.
Upon noticing police, the suspects abandoned the motorcycle and the illegal consignment, fleeing into nearby agricultural fields. The police teams promptly executed a thorough search and area control operation in the vicinity, leading to the recovery of the drugs, arms, and explosives.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar-Rural) Suhail Qasim Mir stated that a comprehensive investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the suspects, trace connections, and dismantle the entire network. A First Information Report has been lodged under Sections 21 and 25 of the NDPS Act and Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act at the Rajasansi police station in Amritsar (Rural).
