Jaipur, Nov 17 (NationPress) A significant discovery has emerged from the mobile device of cleric Osama Umar, who was apprehended in Rajasthan's Barmer district due to alleged connections with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and claims of foreign funding.

The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has unearthed more than 300,000 hidden images along with a considerable volume of dubious digital content.

As stated by IG Vikas Kumar, several ATS teams are currently analyzing the recovered images, deleted files, and questionable material extracted from Osama Umar’s phone and his social media profiles. Umar was taken into custody on November 6 following two days of rigorous questioning and has remained in ATS custody since then.

He was presented in court on Saturday, after which he was sent to jail. Investigations into potential foreign funding are also in progress.

Authorities disclosed that Umar had been in communication with extremist groups via social media. Over the past four years, he had reportedly been consuming online propaganda from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. On November 8, he was allegedly planning to depart for Afghanistan through Dubai to receive terrorist training.

The ATS apprehended him before he could leave the nation.

Numerous chats and messages in Urdu and Persian have been retrieved from his device and are currently under examination.

Simultaneously, efforts are being made to de-radicalize four other individuals who were detained alongside him.

Since the 2008 Jaipur serial blasts, various attempts by terrorist organizations to expand their reach in Rajasthan have been thwarted.

In light of the recent arrests, including Osama Umar and a doctor from Malpura, Tonk, national intelligence agencies, ATS, and state surveillance units have heightened their alertness. Surveillance of suspects, particularly on social media platforms, has been intensified.

IG ATS Vikas Kumar reported that Umar was apprehended in Sanchore on November 4. After verification, he was arrested on November 6. During interrogation, investigators discovered that he had intended to flee to Dubai on November 8—just two days post his arrest. From Dubai, he planned to proceed to Afghanistan to undergo jihad training at a TTP base camp. It has also come to light that after finishing his training, he aimed to return to India and activate a sleeper cell.

The FSL report from Umar’s mobile has now been released. Investigators found that he had been in contact with the terrorist organization for nearly four years. Consequently, approximately four years' worth of data has been retrieved from the device, including over 300,000 images related to extremist content. Most of these images contain messages in Urdu, Arabic, or Persian, which will be analyzed by language experts.

Point of View

It is imperative to approach the recent developments surrounding Osama Umar with a balanced perspective. While the recovery of substantial evidence points to serious implications of radicalization and terrorism, it is vital to ensure that investigations are conducted meticulously, upholding the rule of law while addressing the broader issues of national security.
