Kolkata, Jan 22 (NationPress) On the inaugural day of the Kolkata International Book Fair 2026, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sharply criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state. She urged a collective movement from all societal segments against the hearing notices issued to celebrities, intellectuals, and other renowned figures.
“The SIR process in West Bengal has already led to the unfortunate demise of 110 individuals, either directly or indirectly related to this revision initiative. The ECI ought to have considered the public's discomfort due to the current execution of this exercise, where individuals often wait for four to five hours just to address claims and objections on the draft voters’ list,” the Chief Minister stated during her address at the Book Fair.
Furthermore, she emphasized that the term “logical discrepancy” was never part of the revision process in any other state, claiming its introduction is unique to West Bengal.
According to her, the manner in which revered individuals such as Nobel laureate Amartya Sen and renowned poet Joy Goswami received their hearing notices was marked by a sense of uncertainty.
“In the past, it was the citizens who determined the leadership, not the Commission. Now, the Commission decides who gets to vote, which is unacceptable. Everyone must raise their voice against this injustice. Remember, you cannot stand by silently while a fire rages next door. A united protest is essential,” the Chief Minister urged.
During her speech, she also shared that 135 books authored by her have been published and expressed her intention to write more, including one focused on the harassment faced by individuals due to the SIR.
