Lucknow, Oct 13 (NationPress) In response to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s comments after the gang-rape of a medical student in Durgapur, where she suggested that girls shouldn't venture outside at night, Babita Chauhan, Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission, has called for her resignation.
Chauhan stated to IANS, “When a state’s Chief Minister suggests that girls should remain indoors at night to prevent such incidents, it highlights a serious issue in the region. Mamata Banerjee might as well issue a decree prohibiting women from stepping out for work or education. The environment in West Bengal has deteriorated to a point where violent crimes against women are a constant threat. She should resign without delay.”
She compared the circumstances in West Bengal with those in Uttar Pradesh, asserting, “In our state under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, no one dares to approach a sister or daughter with malicious intent. Law and order here is effectively maintained.”
Chauhan continued, “The Women’s Commission consistently works to ensure that women do not face obstacles. For instance, we advocate for female personnel at public sanitation facilities. As for governance, everything is operating smoothly in Uttar Pradesh.”
On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee stated on Sunday while addressing media outside the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, “In Bengal, we adhere to a zero-tolerance policy towards such crimes. Students from other regions come here for education. I advise them against going out late at night because the police are unable to monitor everyone's movements closely. The responsibility also lies with private medical colleges to ensure the safety of their students.”
The Chief Minister further remarked, “If someone is out at 12:30 a.m. and an incident occurs... we condemn it. We do not condone such actions. Everyone is at liberty to go wherever they wish. However, especially those residing in hostels, must exercise vigilance. I have instructed the police to take strict measures. No one will escape accountability.”
