Kolkata, April 8 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee officially submitted her nomination on Wednesday, representing her home Assembly constituency of Bhabanipur in South Kolkata.

The list of individuals endorsing her nomination embodies the diverse character of Bhabanipur, recognized as a melting pot of cultures from across the nation.

Among her proposers are Ismat Hakim, the wife of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim (representing the Muslim community), Nishpal Singh Rane, the husband of actress-turned-politician and Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Koel Mallick (representing the Punjabi community), Bablu Singh, the local Trinamool Congress block President (representing the Bihari community), and Miraj Shah, a representative of the Bhabanipur Education Society (representing the Gujarati community).

The Chief Minister commenced her journey from her residence on Harish Chatterjee Street in South Kolkata, leading a procession to the Alipore Survey Building, located just a kilometer away.

Accompanying her were Firhad Hakim, her brothers Kartik and Swapan Banerjee, her sister-in-law Kajari Banerjee, and local party councillor Sandip Bakshi, among others.

After submitting her nomination, she addressed the media, emphasizing her deep connection with the residents of Bhabanipur. "I have lived in this constituency since childhood and will always remain here. My life and political journey have been intertwined with Bhabanipur. Today, I express my gratitude and respect to the people of Bhabanipur," she stated.

In anticipation of the crowd, police set up guardrails along part of the road to manage the throngs of supporters who gathered to witness the procession, during which the Chief Minister waved to the crowd.

This election cycle, the Chief Minister faces off against the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who is also contesting from his home constituency of Nandigram in East Midnapore, where he has served as a two-time MLA—initially with the Trinamool Congress from 2016 to 2021, and subsequently with the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2021.

Looking back, Adhikari won the Nandigram seat in 2021, narrowly defeating Mamata Banerjee by just under 2,000 votes. Later, she won a by-election in Bhabanipur, securing her position as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for a third consecutive term.
