West Bengal Minister Under Fire for Comments on 'Muslim Majority'

Kolkata, Dec 16 (NationPress) The West Bengal Minister of Municipal Affairs & Urban Development and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim is now facing backlash from his own party members, including those from the Muslim community, due to his recent statements forecasting that the existing 'religious minorities' will likely evolve into 'majorities' within the state and the country.
The two Trinamool Congress MLAs who have publicly criticized Hakim share the same name: Humayun Kabir. Following Hakim's comments, which gained traction on social media during a public event, the legislator from Bharatpur in Murshidabad district, Humayun Kabir, suggested that the minister should exercise greater caution in his public statements.
The other Humayun Kabir, who represents Debra in West Midnapore and is a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, delivered a more pointed critique via social media.
He opened his social media commentary with a quote from the legendary actor Rajesh Khanna in the classic film 'Anand' -- 'Jindagi lambi nahi bari honi chahiye Hujur Hakimji' (Life should not be long but should be meaningful, Mr Hakimji).
“We desire quality over quantity. It is preferable to have just two children who become educators, doctors, or even police officers like myself, rather than having five who end up as street vendors, migrant workers, rickshaw pullers, or vegetable sellers,” his post expressed.
Following the emergence of Hakim’s statements, BJP leaders launched fierce criticisms against him.
The head of the BJP's Information Technology cell and the party's central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, asserted that Hakim has revealed his true intentions by labeling non-Muslims as 'unfortunate' and supporting efforts by Dawat-e-Islam to convert Hindus to Islam, while now claiming that West Bengal and the rest of India are on the brink of a Muslim majority.
Additionally, Sukanta Majumdar, the West Bengal BJP chief, questioned the silence of other members of the opposition INDIA bloc regarding Hakim's remarks, urging them to condemn such statements.
