Trinamool Congress Issues Official Reprimand to Firhad Hakim for His Remarks on ‘Minority’ Status

Kolkata, Dec 16 (NationPress) Following extensive criticism from both internal and external sources, the Trinamool Congress has taken the step of officially reprimanding Firhad Hakim, the West Bengal Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Minister and Mayor of Kolkata, for his recent remarks concerning 'minority' and 'majority'.

In a statement released today, the Trinamool Congress declared that the party entirely dissociates itself from Hakim's comments suggesting that members of the 'minority' community will soon outnumber the 'majority' within both the state and the nation. The party has also indicated potential internal disciplinary action regarding this issue.

"The All India Trinamool Congress completely disavows and vehemently condemns the remarks made by Shri Firhad Hakim, MIC GoWB, during an event two days ago. These statements do not align with the party’s principles or beliefs. Our dedication to peace, unity, and communal harmony remains steadfast. Any comments that jeopardize the societal fabric of West Bengal will be addressed with utmost seriousness," the statement asserted.

In the meantime, insiders within the Trinamool have revealed that the party leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is notably displeased with Hakim's remarks, which have drawn harsh criticism from various groups.

Political analysts observe that the Chief Minister's discontent regarding Hakim's statements, who is typically one of her closest associates, is clear from the party's official statement, which has also been shared on their official X account.

"Hakim is a member of the party's disciplinary committee. Under these circumstances, such public statements from him are unexpected, causing understandable dissatisfaction from the Chief Minister," noted a member of the West Bengal cabinet who wished to remain anonymous.

Previously, Hakim stirred controversy by labeling individuals not born of a specific community as 'unfortunate'.
