Manipur Congress Leaders Appeal to Priyanka Gandhi for Peace in Troubled Region

New Delhi/Imphal, Dec 11 (NationPress) On Wednesday, prominent Congress figures from Manipur convened with AICC General Secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Delhi, where they addressed the ethnic tensions affecting the northeastern state and earnestly sought her support for peace restoration.

The delegation from Manipur, led by former three-term Chief Minister and seasoned Congress figure Okram Ibobi Singh, along with state Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh, met Priyanka Gandhi at her residence on 10 Janpath and informed her about the current situation in Manipur.

According to Congress sources in Imphal, Priyanka Gandhi provided a patient hearing for approximately half an hour to the party leaders from Manipur.

The Congress representatives briefed the AICC General Secretary on the ongoing unrest that has persisted for the last 19 months in the state.

They also requested her assistance in achieving an immediate return to peace and normalcy.

"The Congress leaders expressed gratitude to the Nehru-Gandhi family, especially Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, for their unwavering support to the people of Manipur during this crisis," the sources reported.

On December 9, the Congress-led INDIA bloc parties from Manipur staged a sit-in protest in Delhi, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the violence-stricken state and address the prolonged ethnic conflicts.

During their address at Jantar Mantar in the national capital, the leaders of the 10-party INDIA bloc asserted that both the central and state governments have failed to mitigate the ethnic crisis, while the lives of the populace continue to be devastated by ongoing violence.

On December 6, the 10-party INDIA bloc submitted a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), requesting PM Modi to visit Manipur to help resolve the 19-month-long ethnic turmoil.

In addition, approximately 20 civil society organizations and student groups from Imphal Valley plan to conduct a rally in Delhi on December 22.
