Imphal, Feb 14 (NationPress) Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh of Manipur declared on Saturday that the state government is dedicated to establishing a world-class polo ground at Lamphelpat in the Imphal West district.
During the closing ceremony of the 2nd Dr Ksh. Chourjit Singh Inter-District Polo Tournament 2026 at Mapal Kangjeibung, the Chief Minister highlighted the fact that polo's roots trace back to Manipur.
The Imphal Polo Ground, known as Mapal Kangjeibung, is celebrated as one of the oldest polo grounds globally. The tournament was organized by the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association (MHRPA).
Singh noted that the current Mapal Kangjeibung Polo Ground does not fulfill the standards necessary for hosting international competitions.
“The state government is focused on creating a world-class polo ground on a designated 32-acre site at Lamphelpat in Imphal West district,” he stated.
Affirming his strong dedication to the project, the Chief Minister promised to inspect the proposed location on Sunday with relevant officials and members of the MHRPA to discuss the details for developing the polo ground.
The tournament's final match commenced with a ceremonial throw-in of the polo ball by the Chief Minister. A total of 10 teams participated in the tournament, with the final showdown occurring between X Polo Club and Chingkheihunba Polo Club.
The closing event was graced by family members of Dr Ksh. Chourjit Singh, MHRPA President H. Deleep Singh, Technical Chairman N. Bedajeet Singh, Ksh. Lakshaheb Singh, students, and others.
Later, the Chief Minister also commemorated the 31st Martyrdom Anniversary of Saheed Madhumangal at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, where he paid heartfelt floral tributes.
Previously, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla remarked that the state is the birthplace of Sagol Kangjei, the original and enduring form of modern polo, emphasizing that the game is an integral part of Manipur’s cultural legacy and identity.
