HAM's Jitan Ram Manjhi Calls Out BJP's 'Stone-Written' Promise Amid Rajya Sabha Seat Talks
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 28 (NationPress) Amid ongoing discussions about seat allocations for the Rajya Sabha elections, the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), a member of the NDA coalition, has called attention to a supposed previous commitment made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) concerning a Rajya Sabha seat.
Union Minister and party leader Jitan Ram Manjhi has downplayed any notions of discontent while firmly restating his allegiance.
“I am not upset, but we were assured two Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat. It was indicated as being written in stone. Yet, we only received one Lok Sabha seat, and for that, we express our gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Manjhi stated.
He emphasized that he is not explicitly demanding a Rajya Sabha position, but he believes the commitment should be honored.
“If you choose to provide it, that's acceptable; if not, that’s fine too. However, you made a promise, and I will always uphold that,” he commented.
Across the nation, a total of 37 Rajya Sabha seats are up for grabs, five of which are from Bihar and deemed politically crucial.
The terms of three NDA MPs and two Grand Alliance MPs from Bihar are approaching their conclusion.
The outgoing members include Ramnath Thakur, Harivansh Narayan Singh, Upendra Kushwaha, Prem Chand Gupta, and Amarendra Dhari Singh.
With the current Assembly strength at 202 MLAs for the NDA, 41 votes are necessary to secure a Rajya Sabha seat. To claim all five seats, 205 MLAs are required.
This calculation renders the fifth seat particularly vital and possibly contentious.
Conversely, the Grand Alliance holds 35 MLAs. If it garners support from five AIMIM MLAs and one from the Bahujan Samaj Party, the opposition may have the potential to secure one seat.
Reports suggest that Tejashwi Yadav and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) are actively pursuing this avenue. However, the AIMIM has purportedly set certain stipulations.
Within the NDA, talks are reportedly taking shape around a preliminary formula: two seats for the BJP, two for the JDU, and one for an ally.
The pivotal question remains whether that one seat will be allocated to HAM.
Manjhi’s consistent reference to the “written in stone” assurance has introduced a new layer to the negotiations.
While he has refrained from making any ultimatums, his comments have ignited speculation that this demand could complicate the NDA’s internal dynamics.
As the Rajya Sabha elections draw near, attention is focused on how the ruling coalition will navigate the seat-sharing arrangements and whether Manjhi’s reminder will serve as political leverage.
