Melbourne, Oct 9 (NationPress) Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell has provided an update following his wrist surgery, indicating he aims for a comeback during the latter part of the T20I series against India, commencing on October 29.
Maxwell sustained a wrist fracture while bowling to fellow allrounder Mitchell Owen at Tauranga’s Bay Oval, which ruled him out of last month's Chappell-Hadlee Trophy T20I series.
He underwent surgery last week on his fractured right wrist to expedite his recovery. Although Australia has not included Maxwell in their squad for the first two T20Is against India, he may be recalled for the last three matches starting November 2.
"Having the surgery last week provides me with a glimmer of hope to participate in the India series if I can get myself fit," Maxwell told reporters in Melbourne.
"The only reason I opted for surgery was the options presented to me: completely miss the India series and avoid surgery, or undergo surgery for a slim chance of playing," he explained.
"This gives me the best opportunity to hopefully contribute, and if not, I’ll be ready earlier for the BBL, which will position me well to ensure my body is in good shape," he added.
Maxwell, who had his cast removed on Wednesday and has started basic movement exercises, is also expected to return for the Melbourne Stars' opening match of BBL 15 on December 18.
Reflecting on the incident when he was hit by Owen's straight pull shot during training in New Zealand, Maxwell remarked, "It was just an unfortunate accident. It happens often; you just don’t hear about it. I was perhaps a bit unlucky with where it struck me on the arm."
"When it hit me, I considered myself lucky that it impacted just the bone and not too much flesh, thinking it would be okay… multiple factors made it an unfortunate event. It just returned too swiftly. It’s not enjoyable," he concluded.
