Can Ponting Help Maxwell Find His Form Before T20 WC?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 29 (NationPress) Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has expressed confidence that Glenn Maxwell will rise above his recent struggles and perform exceptionally at the forthcoming T20 World Cup, despite a disappointing Big Bash League (BBL) season.
During the BBL, Maxwell scored only 76 runs at an average of 15.20 and took two wickets for the Melbourne Stars, along with several dropped catches. He has been given a break from the T20I series against Pakistan but is set to rejoin the team in Sri Lanka ahead of their opening match against Ireland on February 11.
"He is capable because he has done it before. I've coached him extensively, and he is a complex player to predict; he can have a week of stellar training and then not perform, or have a poor week and surprise everyone with an extraordinary performance," Ponting remarked, as quoted by The West Australian.
He also noted that while age might be a concern, the T20 World Cup could reignite Maxwell's competitive spirit. "If his edge starts to dull, it becomes challenging to regain it. However, a World Cup could be the catalyst he needs. He has had some remarkable moments in past World Cups, and for Australia's sake, we hope he creates more in the coming weeks," he added.
Ponting anticipates that Maxwell will be selected for the match against Ireland, with Australia also scheduled to face Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Oman in Group B. "Currently, he wouldn’t be picked based on form, considering the performances of others in the squad during the BBL. However, his experience and the conditions will likely favor his selection," he stated.
"He'll probably encounter a lot of spin bowling, and he can contribute with his own bowling as well. The early matches against relatively weaker teams might provide him with the opportunity he needs to regain his form, scoring runs and taking wickets, which could bolster his performance for the later stages of the tournament," he noted.
Ponting further highlighted Steve Smith as a potential candidate for a call-up to the T20I team if injuries occur. Smith has amassed 299 runs at an average of 59.80 in six BBL matches, including a century, following his impressive performances in the Ashes.
"His statistics surpass those of everyone else. Yet, after being sidelined, and with the team experiencing success, it’s challenging to displace Travis Head or Mitch Marsh from their opening positions. Unfortunately, Smith has been categorized solely as an opening batsman in T20s, which has hindered his selection in recent years. However, he’s just one injury away from returning, and he’s prepared to step in," Ponting concluded.
