Glenn Maxwell Aims for 2028 T20 World Cup and Olympics, No Retirement Plans Yet
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Melbourne, March 4 (NationPress) Veteran Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has firmly stated that he is not ready to end his T20I career, with plans to participate in the 2028 T20 World Cup and the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics.
Maxwell, who will be 40 at the time of Australia's hosting of the 2028 T20 World Cup, is optimistic despite recent criticisms regarding his durability, especially after Australia's early exit in the last T20 World Cup and a noticeable decline in his form. However, the versatile all-rounder emphasizes that he is in no hurry to decide his future.
"I believe delaying my decision about the future is mainly due to the upcoming events over the next year. With limited T20 cricket scheduled, there's no immediate need for formal announcements. I plan to assess how my body feels and if opportunities arise, I hope to be fit and firing," Maxwell shared with reporters in Melbourne on Wednesday.
Australia's T20I calendar appears limited leading up to August 2027, with only eight bilateral matches currently scheduled, and Maxwell has already opted out of ODI cricket. Nonetheless, he remains enthusiastic about prolonging his international T20 career.
When questioned about his chances of competing in the 2028 Olympics and T20 World Cup, Maxwell expressed cautious optimism.
“Am I fit and firing? Hopefully. But I’m not setting any timelines. I felt I improved throughout the World Cup. I gauge my performance more on my movement on the field and my overall feelings rather than just statistics. I felt capable of contributing significantly to the team,” he stated.
Despite modest recent statistics in both T20Is and the Big Bash League, he believes his impact transcends mere numbers.
Australia's next T20I commitment is a three-match series against Bangladesh in June, which also includes ODIs in Bangladesh and Pakistan. Maxwell confirmed ongoing discussions with selectors regarding these plans.
“We’ve had conversations about what lies ahead, and we’ll keep our discussions open as we move forward. If I’m fit and firing and available, I’ll be ready,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Maxwell will continue his involvement in the franchise circuit. He has secured a two-year extension with the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League and is set to participate in the Pakistan Super League, Major League Cricket, and a new T20 league based in Europe later this year. He will play for the Hyderabad Kingsmen in the PSL, marking his debut in this tournament.
“I assessed the available time between the World Cup and MLC, and since we didn’t progress as far as I had hoped, I found myself with additional time between tournaments. I didn’t want to go into the next competition unprepared,” Maxwell explained.
“This opportunity allows me to join a new team from the beginning, which I find very appealing. Being part of building a brand from the ground up is exciting,” he concluded.
