New Delhi, June 3 (NationPress) Following his retirement from ODIs, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell reflected on his stunning 128-ball 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 Cricket World Cup and the 2015 World Cup final as the defining memories of his career.
Maxwell, who made his debut in August 2012, announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday after representing Australia in 149 matches. He accumulated 3,990 runs and claimed 77 wickets.
Throughout his career, the all-rounder secured two ICC Cricket World Cup titles in 2015 and 2023. His last ODI appearance occurred against India in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.
The 36-year-old debuted in the World Cup in 2015, where he played a crucial role in Australia’s triumph over New Zealand in the final held in Melbourne, a moment he described as an “incredible memory.”
“Aaron Finch and I were the two Victorians in the team, and it was consistently just us. We hoped to compete in that final. Knowing our family and friends would be there made it feel destined. Not many have the chance to win a World Cup on home soil surrounded by loved ones. We were incredibly lucky. The celebrations went on for days. It’s truly a remarkable memory. What a way to kick off my ODI World Cup journey with a home victory,” Maxwell shared with SEN.
His most memorable ODI performance came during a group stage match against Afghanistan in the 2023 Cricket World Cup in Mumbai, where he scored an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls, despite suffering from severe cramps, rescuing Australia from 91/7 while chasing 293.
“It doesn’t get more special than that. Everything felt perfect. I got dropped a few times, and things just went my way, allowing me to express myself. Battling cramps and back spasms added to the moment's significance. It was a culmination of everything I've aspired to do throughout my career, all in that one game,” he noted.
“To have that defining innings is something I never anticipated, but I’m grateful it happened at such a pivotal moment in a World Cup,” he added.
Maxwell's decision to retire from ODIs aims to focus on preparing for next year’s ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, along with his commitments in the domestic Big Bash League and other global events.
