Chennai, May 1 (NationPress) The Punjab Kings have faced a significant setback in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 journey as allrounder Glenn Maxwell has been officially ruled out for the rest of the season due to a fractured finger.
“Glenn Maxwell has been sidelined for the remainder of the season because of a finger injury. We extend our wishes for his swift recovery,” the Punjab Kings announced on X.
The Australian allrounder, who sustained a fracture in his right-hand finger, is the second prominent player to exit the Punjab roster this month, following Lockie Ferguson, who was also ruled out with a serious injury.
Maxwell, acquired for Rs 4.2 crore at the recent mega auction, has faced challenges with his batting this season, accruing just 48 runs over six innings and failing to achieve double digits in his last four matches. Nevertheless, he managed to take four wickets with his off-spin bowling before his injury concluded his campaign.
During the toss before the match against Chennai Super Kings, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged this unfortunate loss, stating that the team had not yet settled on a replacement. “We are confident in our mindset and our players outside the playing XI. We have several match-winners, and we will stick with that,” he remarked.
As of now, the franchise has not disclosed any replacement plans.
After the clash against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday, head coach Ricky Ponting elaborated on the team's strategy regarding replacements and player rotation. “We will look to sign replacements at some point,” he said. “We have until our 12th game to finalize replacements, giving us a few games to assess the situation. We are trying to find talent from within our squad as well.”
Currently, Punjab is in second place on the IPL 2025 points table, just behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Despite the injury challenges, the core of the team remains resilient, and Ponting indicated that they are scouting Indian domestic talent to address the gaps.
“We are exploring options within the Indian talent pool. A few players trained with us yesterday and will travel to Dharamsala for closer evaluation. They might secure a Punjab contract in the future,” he shared.
Ferguson’s absence has already created a gap in the bowling lineup, and Ponting acknowledged the need for patience, given the scarcity of high-quality replacements, particularly with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) coinciding with the IPL window. “With the PSL happening concurrently, high-quality replacements are hard to come by,” he admitted.
