New Chandigarh, May 4 (NationPress) The Punjab Kings (PBKS) have secured all-rounder Mitchell Owen as a substitute for the injured Glenn Maxwell, who will miss the remainder of IPL 2025 due to a fractured finger.
The Australian all-rounder, Owen, has participated in 34 T20 matches, amassing 646 runs, which includes two centuries and a top score of 108. He will join PBKS for Rs 3 Crore and has also claimed 10 T20 wickets.
Maxwell, who was acquired for Rs 4.2 crore during the last mega auction, faced challenges with the bat this season, accumulating only 48 runs across six innings and failing to achieve double digits in his last four matches. His scores were 0, 30, 1, 3, 7, and 7, signifying a second consecutive disappointing season after scoring just 52 in nine innings in 2024.
Despite his batting struggles, he proved to be a valuable option with the ball, securing four wickets with his offspin. Unfortunately, his injury has now concluded his campaign. This injury marks the second significant player to exit the PBKS roster, following Lockie Ferguson, who was sidelined due to a serious injury.
On the other hand, Owen, who went unsold in last year’s mega auction, made headlines in the Big Bash this January by matching Craig Simmons' record for the fastest BBL century (108 off 42 balls with 11 sixes), leading the Hobart Hurricanes to their first title.
He then followed this achievement with a stunning 149 off just 69 balls for Tasmania in the One-Day Cup, attracting attention from franchises in the SA20 and PSL.
Currently, with six victories from ten matches, PBKS is positioned fourth on the points table, setting them up for a playoffs push. They are set to face the Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday evening, where a win could strengthen their position in the top four as the league stage approaches its end.
