Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Monday, 31 August cautioned voters in Uttar Pradesh against what she described as electoral deception — freebies, attractive promises, and pre-poll announcements — as the state gears up for the 2027 Assembly elections. Speaking at a party preparedness review meeting in Lucknow, she directed BSP workers from state level to booth-level committees to accelerate organisational efforts and work towards returning the party to power in the state.

Key Developments at the Lucknow Meeting

The internal review covered candidate selection, organisational strengthening, and booth-level campaign activities. Mayawati urged party workers to counter the tactics of rival parties and expand the BSP's outreach more effectively. She made clear that the party's goal is to form the next government in Uttar Pradesh in 2027.

The meeting also took up preparations for the 9 October death anniversary of BSP founder Kanshi Ram. Mayawati directed workers to organise the commemoration with full dedication at the Kanshi Ram Memorial complex near Buddha Smriti Upvan on Lucknow's VIP Road, with participants expected from across the state, including western Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati's Warning on Freebies and Electoral Promises

The BSP supremo expressed particular concern over attempts by political parties to sway voters — especially women — through incentives and election-time commitments. According to her, repeated instances of governments failing to honour post-election promises have made it necessary to warn the electorate in advance. She appealed to voters to exercise their franchise freely, without influence from rival parties, framing the issue as one of national and public interest rather than mere political calculation.

Mayawati criticised governments across various states for alleged unfulfilled promises, betrayal of public trust, and negligence towards public welfare, asserting that the BSP consistently opposes such practices.

On Inflation, Migration, and Gen Z Discontent

Targeting ruling governments over inflation, poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment, Mayawati argued that these challenges are forcing many people from Uttar Pradesh to migrate to other states in search of livelihood opportunities. She contended that electoral promises made during campaigns rarely provide lasting solutions and amount to little more than political rhetoric.

Notably, she also referred to growing public dissatisfaction among younger generations, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who, she said, are increasingly speaking out against what they perceive as anti-people policies and are facing legal and administrative action as a result. She stressed that governments carry a constitutional responsibility to deliver for citizens throughout their tenure — not merely during poll season.

BSP's Claimed Record and the Road Ahead

Highlighting the party's own time in office, Mayawati claimed the BSP government had worked continuously without waiting for electoral considerations, delivering achievements in social transformation and economic empowerment. She positioned this record as a contrast to what she characterised as the hollow promises of rival parties.

With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections still roughly two years away, the BSP's early mobilisation signals an intent to rebuild ground-level presence after a string of electoral setbacks. How effectively the party converts organisational activity into voter support will be closely watched.
