Did Harassment Lead to the Tragic Suicide of a Medical Student in Bengaluru?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, January 9 (NationPress) A young female medical student tragically took her own life, reportedly due to harassment at her college. This heartbreaking event occurred in Chandapura, located near Anekal on the outskirts of Bengaluru, on a Friday.
The victim, identified as 23-year-old Yashasvini, was enrolled in her third year at a private dental college situated in the Bommanahalli region of Bengaluru. Her family has accused her instructors of insulting and harassing her for being absent for a day due to an eye ailment.
Yashasvini was pursuing studies in the Oral Medicine and Radiology department.
According to the authorities, she missed classes on January 7 due to pain in her eye. Upon returning to class the next day, she faced disparaging comments from a lecturer regarding the eye drops she had been prescribed, questioning how many drops she had used and whether she had emptied an entire bottle into her eye. Furthermore, she was reportedly barred from presenting a seminar and handling a radiology case.
Her mother, Parimala, expressed her outrage, claiming that her daughter was publicly humiliated for merely being absent for one day. "She had suffered an eye injury and had communicated this to us. The insults she endured regarding her eye issue were made in front of her classmates. She confided in me about her troubles. Don't these educators have children of their own? The lecturer and the college administration humiliated my daughter, leading to her tragic decision," she stated.
She called for strict measures against the lecturer responsible for the insults and the college principal. "My daughter was dedicated to her studies and never wasted time. How could a teacher demean her publicly? Instead of addressing her absence, they should have contacted us. Why target my child?" she questioned.
Parimala emphasized that her daughter was a conscientious and high-achieving student, and such humiliation had a profound impact on her mental health. "She was sensitive and worried about receiving low grades that would disappoint me. I have only one child. Who can I share my sorrow with? No other student should endure such injustice," she lamented.
The police are currently investigating the matter, with further updates expected.
