Did Harassment Over Skin Tone Lead to Bengaluru Dental Student's Suicide?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 13 (NationPress) A thorough investigation into the tragic suicide case of a dental student in Bengaluru has revealed that the young woman allegedly took her own life due to humiliation she faced from her lecturers concerning her skin tone, according to police reports released on Tuesday.
Yashaswini, a 23-year-old student at a private dental institution in Bengaluru, also faced derision over her dressing style, as the police noted.
Following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) in this matter, the administration of the dental college, situated in the Bommanahalli area of Bengaluru, has terminated the employment of six lecturers.
Yashaswini reportedly endured insults like, "How can someone with dark skin aspire to be a doctor?" which are said to have profoundly impacted her mental health, ultimately leading to her tragic decision.
It has been claimed that upon returning to class after a day off due to eye pain, she was denied the chance to give a seminar and handle a radiology case, and was subjected to verbal abuse with derogatory comments.
On January 8, Yashaswini ended her life. Her family and classmates have accused the lecturers of instigating the harassment that allegedly pushed her to this heartbreaking end. In response to the incident, they gathered at the mortuary and voiced their protests against the college management.
A complaint has been filed at the Suryanagar Police Station against five individuals, including the college principal, for alleged caste-based harassment that purportedly contributed to the student's suicide. Following the filing of the FIR, the college administration dismissed six faculty members.
The terminated lecturers were part of the Oral Medicine and Radiology (OMR) Department.
Yashaswini's mother, Parimala, has called for stringent legal repercussions for the lecturers implicated in her daughter’s death. "My daughter aspired to be a doctor and contribute to society. However, the college lecturers shattered her dreams. The justice my daughter deserves should serve as a crucial message to all students," she stated.
This incident occurred in Chandapura, near Anekal, on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Yashaswini was a third-year dental student specializing in Oral Medicine and Radiology.
Her parents recounted that she faced harassment in class for taking just one day off due to an eye-related issue. Allegedly, on January 7, she missed classes because of eye pain, and upon her return, a lecturer made snide remarks about the eye drops she used, questioning how many she had applied and if she had used an entire bottle.
She was also reportedly barred from presenting a seminar or handling a radiology case.
Parimala claimed that her daughter was humiliated in front of her peers for her brief absence. "She had an eye injury and kept us informed. She was mocked in front of her classmates for her eye issue. She confided everything to me. Don’t these lecturers have children? The treatment my daughter received from the faculty and the college management led to her tragic decision," the bereaved mother expressed.
She emphasized that her daughter was a hardworking and top-performing student, but the constant humiliation took a heavy toll on her mental state.
"She was sensitive and feared disappointing me with poor grades. I have only one daughter. Who can I share my sorrow with? No other child should endure such injustice," Parimala lamented.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into this heartbreaking case.
