Did a Bengaluru Medical Student Take Her Life Due to College Harassment?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 9 (NationPress) A tragic incident occurred involving a 23-year-old female student from a private dental college in Bengaluru, who reportedly took her own life on Friday after facing harassment from college staff, according to her family. The event took place in Chandapura, located on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
The young woman, known as Yashasvini, was in her third year specializing in Oral Medicine and Radiology at a college in the Bommanahalli area. Her family claims that she faced ridicule in class after being absent for just one day due to an eye issue.
On January 7, Yashasvini missed classes because of eye pain. Upon her return the next day, it is alleged that a lecturer made derogatory comments about the eye drops she was using, questioning how many drops she had applied and whether she had used an entire bottle. Furthermore, she was reportedly denied the opportunity to present a seminar and was barred from participating in a radiology case.
Her mother, Parimala, expressed her outrage over the humiliation her daughter experienced for a single day's absence. "She had an eye injury and informed our family about it. The way she was belittled in front of her classmates was unacceptable. The lecturer and college management have deeply hurt my daughter, leading her to this tragic decision," she stated.
Parimala is calling for strict measures against both the lecturer and the principal of the college. "My daughter was dedicated to her studies and never wasted time. How could a lecturer demean her publicly? If she was absent, they should have consulted with us. Why target my child?" she questioned.
She also highlighted that Yashasvini was an accomplished student who was sensitive about her academic performance. "She feared disappointing me with poor marks. I have lost my only daughter. Who can I share my sorrow with? No other child should undergo such injustice," she lamented.
The police are currently investigating the incident, and further details are awaited.
This incident follows a series of similar tragedies in the region, including the suicide of a postgraduate psychiatry student from Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) in August 2025, who had been struggling with depression, and the death of a first-year MBBS student from Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) in July 2025.
