Mysuru, Nov 16 (NationPress) A faculty member from a well-known institution has been charged with sexually harassing a student in the Mysuru district of Karnataka, according to police reports released on Sunday.
The complaint was filed at the Jayalakshmipuram police station located in Mysuru city.
An FIR has been registered under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 75(2) (sexual harassment), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The lecturer accused in this case has been identified as Bharat Bhargava.
In her statement, the victim alleges that the accused sought to manipulate her by offering high marks in her exams and promising assistance in securing a good job.
She also mentioned that the lecturer made several inappropriate comments.
Further, she claimed that upon reporting his misconduct, he threatened her with severe repercussions.
He allegedly coerced her by stating that if she did not comply with his demands, he would make sure she failed her exams. The student is now calling for strict action to be taken against the accused.
In a separate incident in October, a professor from a private college in Bengaluru was arrested for sexual harassment after he allegedly deceived a student into visiting his home and made unwanted advances.
A retired professor from Bengaluru University was also apprehended for stalking, sexual harassment, and extortion against a woman.
In this case, the police eventually granted the accused bail.
Additionally, a professor was detained after he brought a student to his house under false pretenses, claiming his family would be present.
In July, two lecturers from Moodabidri College, along with an accomplice, were arrested for allegedly blackmailing and repeatedly sexually assaulting a student.
The victim's parents reached out to the Karnataka State Women's Commission, which instructed the police to take action. The accused reportedly used compromising images and videos to intimidate the victim into silence.
