Bengaluru, Oct 31 (NationPress) The police in Karnataka apprehended former Registrar of Bangalore University, Prof. B.C. Mylarappa, on Friday, following allegations of sexually harassing a widow and issuing threats to her safety. The arrest was made by the Basaveshwaranagar police after the victim filed two formal complaints.
An FIR has been lodged under Sections 74, 75, 78, 352, and 351 of the BNS Act. Mylarappa is currently undergoing a medical examination, and the authorities are preparing to present him before the court later today.
As per police reports, the woman, who lost her husband, met Mylarappa in 2022 while working at his institution.
She accused him of exploiting her vulnerable situation by engaging in inappropriate conduct. He allegedly began sending her unsolicited messages and insisted that she comply with his advances.
Further allegations state that Mylarappa visited her residence multiple times, incessantly knocking on her door and demanding that she invite him in. Unable to endure the persistent harassment, the woman ultimately filed a complaint at the Basaveshwaranagar Police Station.
While the investigation was ongoing, she lodged an additional complaint at the Kamakshipalya Police Station, claiming that she was being coerced to retract her original complaint against Mylarappa. She reported that a group threatened her, warning that her life would be at risk if she did not withdraw her allegations, with threats of an acid attack.
Given the gravity of the situation, the police proceeded to arrest Mylarappa. An extensive investigation is currently in progress.
B.C. Mylarappa previously served as Registrar at Bangalore University until his removal by the Karnataka High Court in 2012 due to accusations of plagiarism and misappropriation of funds. Despite his dismissal, he retained other positions at the university, which have faced scrutiny, including a 2019 directive demanding his removal from roles such as Director of Distance Education and Head of Sociology.
In 2019, the Higher Education Department mandated Bangalore University to terminate his appointments, deeming them illegal and asserting he was unfit for any significant position.
Prof. Mylarappa, who once chaired the Sociology Department, was appointed Registrar (Administration) in November 2011, recognized as the first Registrar from the Scheduled Caste category and one of the youngest to hold the position at that time.
After his resignation as Registrar, Mylarappa sought to enter the political arena, aiming to secure a ticket for the state Assembly elections through parties such as the INC or JD(S).
