Shillong, May 22 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma, declared on Thursday that the hill state boasts the youngest population in the nation. He emphasized that the government is committed to transforming this demographic advantage into a global powerhouse.
CM Sangma stated, "Meghalaya is home to one of the youngest populations in India, and we are leveraging this demographic edge to become a global force. If we manage to send even 30,000 professionals abroad, the resulting remittances could reach Rs 250 crore monthly, which translates to Rs 3,000 crore annually for our families. We are turning a challenge into a tremendous opportunity."
He inaugurated the German Language Training Programme for Overseas Placement at the Shillong Tech Park.
This initiative, backed by the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS) under the Department of Labour, Employment, and Skill Development, aims to prepare youth for opportunities in Germany.
After successfully placing Meghalaya's youth in Japan and Singapore, the focus has now shifted to Germany, which presents a global platform for aspiring nurses and healthcare professionals from the state.
He reassured full governmental support, including financial assistance for initial training and fostering trust in overseas placements, stating, "Parents previously had concerns about cost and safety. Today, the government acts as a guarantor. We are dedicated to ensuring the safety and best opportunities for your children."
The Chief Minister also pledged to accompany the inaugural batch of selected candidates to Germany personally.
He expressed that this partnership would enhance the ties between India and Germany, and he is pleased that Meghalaya's strong young workforce can contribute to this growth narrative.
"Germany is encountering a critical shortage of healthcare professionals. By 2035, there will be a need for an additional 7 million skilled workers. Today's programme signifies a transformative journey—these young professionals will not just work in Germany but excel, contribute, and prosper," remarked Andrea Jeske, Deputy Consul General of the German Consulate Kolkata, showing enthusiasm about the collaboration.
She also pointed out Germany's new immigration policies, such as the Opportunity Card and the Skilled Immigration Act, which facilitate smoother pathways for non-EU workers.
Jan Eben, Country Director General of People to Help Germany, highlighted the programme's comprehensive approach, stressing that this partnership is about more than just jobs—it's about cultivating lives.
