Beirut, Nov 4 (NationPress) President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon stated that the country has no alternative but to engage in negotiations with Israel, emphasizing that diplomacy must take priority over conflict, as noted in a statement released by his office.
"In the realm of politics, we utilize three instruments: diplomacy, economy, and war. When warfare yields no results, what are our options? Every conflict ultimately concludes with discussions, and those discussions are held not with friends or allies, but with adversaries," Aoun remarked on Monday during a gathering with officials at Baabda Palace.
He further stated, "The discourse of negotiation holds greater significance than the rhetoric of war, which we have observed only leads to destruction," commending the diplomatic initiatives of Lebanon’s leadership, including Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Aoun underscored that Lebanon's national interests should take precedence over political, religious, and sectarian matters. He urged politicians to place national unity above electoral aspirations and to transcend sectarian divides that have historically compromised the nation's stability, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
In late October, Aoun instructed the Lebanese army to counter any Israeli incursions in the southern region following a lethal raid on the border village of Blida, a directive that received approval from Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem.
A ceasefire mediated by the US and France between Israel and Hezbollah has been active since late November of the previous year, putting an end to months of cross-border conflicts instigated by the war in Gaza.
Despite this truce, Israel has continued to conduct sporadic strikes in Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah "threats." Lebanon, alongside several international organizations, has denounced these actions as breaches of the ceasefire.
