Bengaluru, March 25 (NationPress) The Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara inaugurated a memorial on Wednesday outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, dedicated to the memory of 11 Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans who tragically perished in a stampede during the team's IPL victory celebrations. He offered floral tributes to honor the deceased.

The memorial has been built in close proximity to the stadium to pay homage to the victims of the unfortunate incident that took place during the festive atmosphere following RCB's IPL championship win.

Among the attendees were notable figures such as MLA N.A. Harris, MLC D.S. Arun Kumar, KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad, RCB CEO Rajesh Menon, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, along with KSCA office-bearers Santosh Menon, Sujith Somasundar, and Vinay Mrityunjaya.

After the memorial's unveiling, Parameshwara addressed the media, stating: “The entire nation remembers the tragic stampede last year, where 11 young individuals lost their lives while celebrating RCB’s first IPL victory. This incident attracted criticism towards both the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and the state government on national and international fronts.”

“In response, the government took action and implemented multiple measures. The families of those who died were supported by the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, and others. Both KSCA and RCB also expressed their condolences. Such a tragedy should never have occurred, but it did. Consequently, the government appointed the Justice Michael D’Cunha Commission to identify any shortcomings. Following their report, we consulted with relevant agencies to ensure the implementation of the recommended changes,” he explained.

“The Commission has proposed both immediate and long-term recommendations. I extend my gratitude to KSCA for creating this memorial in memory of the departed fans. It serves as a lasting tribute. RCB and other organizations have also shown their respect. This event allows us to convey our condolences,” he stated.

Parameshwara mentioned that the government has approved the hosting of a cricket match at the venue on March 28 as part of the aftermath of this tragedy.

“Necessary improvements have been made. The police department, the local civic agency, and our committee have endorsed the arrangements. I am confident that the police, KSCA, and RCB have adequately prepared. We have issued directives to prevent any recurrence of such an incident,” he conveyed.

“All stakeholders are in agreement. KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad, an international representative, is at the helm. This presents a challenge for his team, and I wish them success,” he added.

“I have personally led discussions with KSCA and RCB, emphasizing their responsibility for future events. Accountability is crucial. I have also instructed the police to ensure an adequate presence to maintain safety,” he stated.

“Matches are permitted. The number of matches and details will be determined by the relevant authorities. The government will maintain a facilitating role without interference,” he noted.

“Compensation for the families has already been provided. We will honor the memory of the 11 youths who tragically lost their lives. A memorial has been established, preserving their legacy. I formed a committee led by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Chairman, which included the Bengaluru Police Commissioner and others. Their evaluation confirmed that implementing the short-term recommendations will assist KSCA and RCB in conducting matches safely,” he concluded.

“If we do not allow the matches to proceed, it could tarnish Bengaluru's reputation,” he remarked.

“I urge fans to enjoy matches responsibly and avoid unsafe behaviors. Let not excessive enthusiasm lead to perilous scenarios. Enjoy the matches with care. Bengaluru has long been known as a peaceful and respected city within the cricket community,” he urged.
