Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 15 (NationPress) Authorities have detained two individuals linked to the incident at the Salt Lake Stadium, officially known as Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, during the event featuring Lionel Messi on Saturday.
A senior representative from Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate stated on Monday that the arrests were made in the Nagerbazar locality by officers from the South Bidhannagar police station. The detainees have been recognized as Gaurav Basu and Shubhrapratim Dey.
As per police reports, these two were pinpointed through CCTV footage capturing the vandalism at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan stadium.
The police have lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against the apprehended individuals under eight specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These include charges of obstructing a government official from performing their duties, intentionally causing harm to a government official, and disturbing public peace.
On Saturday, turmoil ensued at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan stadium during Lionel Messi's presence in Kolkata. Messi, along with teammates Suarez and Di Maria, left shortly after arriving, having spent approximately 22 minutes at the venue. During their brief stay, a large crowd, including state Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, surrounded them.
This overwhelming crowd left many spectators unable to see Messi, leading to public discontent that erupted into chaos with hoardings being torn down, followed by a flurry of bottles hurled from the stands.
The unrest escalated further, culminating in the destruction of chairs and a breach of the fencing, which allowed angry crowds to surge onto the pitch.
Since the incident, numerous videos capturing Saturday's rampage have circulated on social media, prompting police attention. They have begun analyzing the CCTV footage, which led to the identification of Gaurav and Shubhrapratim, resulting in their Monday morning arrests.
“Two individuals have been taken into custody. We are reviewing CCTV footage to identify additional participants in the vandalism,” the senior police officer stated.
In the wake of the disturbance at Yuva Bharati Krirangan, Satadru Dutta, the primary organizer of Messi's Kolkata visit, was apprehended at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Saturday. The Bidhannagar police have initiated a case against him on various charges, including inciting violence and damaging property.
The court has mandated a 14-day police custody for him.
Meanwhile, the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate has summoned six representatives from different companies involved with Saturday's event. Reports suggest that officials from Satadru Dutta's company are among those required to appear at the police station on Tuesday.
According to sources, the summoned individuals were linked to various aspects of the event, including those responsible for supplying water, cold drinks, and ticket management.
The ticket distribution company has also been instructed to freeze its accounts, ensuring that no funds reach Satadru's company. The summoned representatives will be interrogated regarding their roles in the event's organization and any potential negligence.
