New Delhi/Ahmedabad, Feb 24 (NationPress) In a significant development, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned the expansion of the North-South Corridor of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) from GIFT City to Shahpur in Ahmedabad. This initiative aims to enhance connectivity between the city and the state's financial center.

The Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, expressed his appreciation for the decision, stating, “This extension will significantly improve connectivity between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, providing direct advantages to all sectors.”

This new 3.33-kilometre segment will include three elevated stations and is projected to be completed within four years.

The estimated cost of the project stands at Rs 1,067.35 crore. Established under Prime Minister Modi’s vision, GIFT City has emerged as a global hub for financial technology.

The metro extension is intended to provide more accessible transportation for employees of multinational companies, educational institutions, and businesses, as well as residents traveling from Ahmedabad.

Currently, the Ahmedabad Metro operates across 68.28 kilometres, covering both Phase I and Phase II. Phase I, which runs from APMC to Motera Stadium in the North-South Corridor and from Thaltej Village to Vastral Village in the East-West Corridor, has been operational since September 2022.

Phase II, which connects Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and from GNLU to GIFT City, has been functioning since January 2026.

Combined, these phases include 53 stations and serve approximately 1.6 lakh passengers daily. With the introduction of this extension, GMRC aims to further integrate GIFT City into Ahmedabad’s public transport framework.

The three elevated stations along this route are expected to accommodate both commercial and residential commuters, providing a convenient and efficient travel option.

This initiative marks the state’s continuous efforts to broaden Ahmedabad's metro network, supporting the city's rapid urban growth in anticipation of significant global events like the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the aspiring 2036 Olympic Games.
